Week one of roller-skating is full of learning here at CS Elementary. Responsibility is key to the success of this program. Students are responsible for getting equipment out, on, and properly put away. They gain an understanding that how they put stuff away impacts the next group skating. They learn the importance of working together and helping each other out. The faster they get stuff of the quicker we all get to skate. No one skates until everyone has all their equipment on. In addition to learning what it looks like to have responsibilities they learn several skills during this first week. The number one most important component is SAFETY! If we aren’t safe we can’t skate. The first skill they learn is the safest way to stand up, than the safest ways to stay standing (T Position). The next skill learned is falling. “Yes all of you will fall so we will learn the safest way to do that”. First we squat to lower our center of gravity. This can safe us from falling all together and if we still fall we are lower to the ground lessening our impact. Second thing we do is hug ourselves to protect our arms. The number one injury in skating is a broken wrist. To prevent that tucking arms in NOT reaching protects us. We than land on our gluteus maximus (our butt). After we fall we get back up quickly so no one else falls over us. Students learn three ways to move on the skates penguin waddle, diamond or football, abs the push and glide. Finally they learn three ways to stop t-stop, Michael Jackson 180, and the toe drag. Once we learn the skills we practice them in a controlled setting. As we progress in the skating unit students are will gradually progress and the responsibilities are released to them. This is a fun unit and offers so much more to our students beyond being a fun activity. We are all looking forward to the weeks to come. I happy to say we had one very successful week of learning. It is so much fun to see them progress and improve. Week two we are ready for you!

gym has been converted to a roller rink for the next month of physical education learning. We skate in the gym for a month and students learn the skills needed to safely and properly skate. They learn to fall, stand, move, and stop. on top of that i stress the importance of respect and responsibility. This is a great unit and I am so glad for the support I have to be able to get students active in a fun way.
